Summertime, Summer Hues at Ennis Fine Furniture

Ennis Furniture understands the profound influence that color and texture hold in transforming a home. As summer quickly approaches, it brings with it the opportunity to refresh your interior design to reflect the vibrancy and lightness of the season. A carefully selected palette and a blend of textures can effectively invite the outside in, filling your home with the warmth and brightness of summer.

Summer color palettes often draw inspiration from nature, with hues ranging from bright floral tones to the deep blue of the ocean. In particular, citrusy shades like lime green and sunny yellow or serene pastels such as sky blue or coral pink can help to re-energize your space. Pair these lively colors with neutral tones to create balance and allow the summer shades to stand out.

In terms of textures, consider materials that echo the lightness of the season. Light, airy fabrics like cotton or linen on your upholstery or drapes add a breezy, relaxed feel. Consider adding woven or rattan elements, which are not only trendy but also convey a sense of organic warmth that’s perfect for the summer months. The key is to mix and match textures to add depth and interest without overwhelming the space.

As you revamp your home for summer, it’s important to choose pieces that will endure beyond the season. Century Furniture offers a range of timeless pieces that can effortlessly blend with your summer palette and textures, and beyond. Their well-crafted furniture pairs beautifully with any design choice, serving as the perfect canvas upon which to display the vibrancy of the season.

As summer unfolds, it’s the perfect time to breathe fresh life into your home. We invite you to explore the endless possibilities of seasonal design with our interior designers who are happy to help assist you. With the right balance of color and texture, you can create a space that captures the essence of summer while maintaining an enduring appeal that transcends seasons. Embrace the beauty of summer with Ennis Furniture, and let your home shine.

Springtime Patio Season – Patio Fusion Curved Sofa

Springtime Patio Season

Patio Fusion Curved Sofa

The Treasure Valley during the shapeshifting of Springtime is truly a sight to behold; the dull, faded browns that have adorned the bleak of winter have turned coat to a vibrant palette full of emerald foliage and rolling landscapes. A jaunt through the foothills at this time of year reveals a sight more common to Wales or Ireland than to a place technically identifiable as a ‘high desert’. That eternal fresh feeling, the instinctual signal that summer won’t be long is finally upon us! In true Idahoan fashion, we tend to seize upon this opportunity with gusto, uplifting nearly every activity that has been shunned indoors due to the cold and throwing them back outdoors and in all directions. Idaho is commonly (and jokingly) referred to as ‘one giant park’ rather than a bonafide state, and after seeing hordes of people flock to trails, nature reserves, and waterways almost immediately once the weather warms, it’s easy to understand why.

Since we spend most of our summer months outdoors, we’ve grown accustomed to taking the occasional respite in the shadow of a backyard tree or by the babble of crystalline waters. Taking it all in from the comfort of your back patio is a pastime understood no better than by the interior design team of Ennis Fine Furniture, your local family-owned furniture store. In business and in the Valley since 1946, we’ve taken in many-a famous Idaho sunsets from a seat in only the finest hand-crafted, custom-built furniture that the Pacific Northwest has to offer. Whether it’s the great outdoors you’re looking to cull a sofa set around to enjoy the long summer evenings or a whole-home interior redoux that’ll change your entire look–including your patio–the renowned designers at Ennis can facilitate any and all of these needs. And even if it’s just a single piece you’re after, they’ll be more than happy to provide recommendations from our partners in craftsmanship.

Take the Patio Fusion Curved Sofa from Brown Jordan. A simple and understated look, with traditional lines that help draw the eye to the function of the piece over its form. It is a solid unit that loudly proclaims comfort with large, buoyant cushions and a cross-weave composite fabric structure that gives the body support while still offering a lightness invaluable to outdoor furniture. Perhaps its most defining feature, the curvature of the sofa allows for an entertainer’s delight, almost like a plush version of an amphitheater’s round, concrete pews. Since the curve of the sofa creates a wide-angle vantage point, you’ll no longer have to place two separate chairs to face either the foothills in the North or Southeast to the Big Sky Country; this one piece can do both! See how this sofa and other Fusion pieces from Brown Jordan stacks up with your outdoor look at any of our Ennis Showrooms, from Boise to the Tri-Cities to Spokane!

Make Way For The Holidays!

Make Way For The Holidays!

The Holidays are upon us! Are you planning on having guests over to help celebrate the Season but believe your house may be a bit cluttered? Here are some helpful tips that may assist you in clearing up some space for the entertaining you want to do this season. And, at the same time, make your home-space more peaceful and uncluttered.

Donate!

A great way to clear additional room in your home for the Holidays is by donating the décor, furniture, and cluttering items to your favorite charity! Items that you may look at first are, of course, items that have no sentimental value to you. Décor can bring visual and physical bulk and clutter to your living space. You may look around your room and see a dried flower arrangement on a table, desk, or mounted on the wall and suddenly realize you placed it there in 1994. This may be a good time to donate it. Bulky furniture items that tend to trespass into throughways and pathways are perfect candidates for removing to gain space. Think of that old end-table that you have banged your foot on multiple times over the years. Donating it will not only clear more space in your home, but it may also just feel quite satisfying! Tip: if an item truly brings you joy, regardless of how “cluttering” it may be, hang on to it. Your joy is enough reason to have it in your life. For those items you do decide to donate, we can assume they will bring joy to someone else! Afterall, Joy is what the Holiday Season is all about!

Rearrange Your Living Space!

It is amazing how just a little time experimenting with how your furniture and décor are laid out can make a big difference in the usable space of a room. We recommend roughly sketching (or beautifully sketching if you are capable!) your living space out on a notepad with your furniture and décor. Experiment by drawing your furniture and décor items in different locations of the room. Use as many pages as necessary and experiment with different layouts! You will want to pay special attention to walkways, opens areas, and light because your goal is to create more space and less clutter. Once you believe you have the new layout right, it is time to bring in “the troops” to help move your furniture!

Tidy Up!

Look around your living space with a critical eye as this may lead to revelations for making way for the Holidays. Do you have 1, 2, or 3+ too many decorative pillows and or throw blankets taking up space on the sofa and chairs in your home? Removing those items to a linen closet or storage trunk will provide additional seating space and create a cleaner presentation for both you and your guests. Another area of the home that may need attention during the Holidays is your entryway. Shoes, sweaters, & coats that normally reside in these areas can provide clutter and should be organized in appropriate storage areas and closets while you are entertaining. Speaking of the entryway closet- you will want to make sure there is room for your guests’ winter coats when they come to call!

Add Something New!

Nothing can revitalize a room like a new piece of furniture. You may want to “go big” with a completely new take on the room with the new furniture and décor to match, or you may decide just one anchor piece, like a buffet table, is enough. We recommend that you choose an item that gives you joy and will be around for many more holiday seasons to come.

Bring In a Professional!

Regardless of the time of year, if you are ready to bring in a fresh set of eyes to help you reimagine and beautify your space, then it may be time to bring in a professional. The professional home designers at Ennis Fine Furniture can help you reimagine your living space, not just for the Holiday Season, but for your everyday life all year long.

COOL COLORS, COOL HOME

interior design - cool colors, cool home

Is your home a place of tranquility and peace? It is where we return after a long day and escape from the outside world oversaturated with stimulation. Picking color palettes and interior decor that are conducive to this effect is of utmost importance in creating a carefully coordinated, harmonious room.

Cool colors, Cool home

The utilization of color is key to creating that balanced, “Zen” experience in your home. Lavender, light blue, and even a light green color can be mixed and matched with neutral whites and grays to significantly calm down the atmosphere of any living space. They are particularly great to implement in bedrooms, dampening any harshness that might be present before rest. No matter what vision you’re going for, a fine-tuned and cool color scheme is sure to not only give your home a decorative edge, but also a more inviting, peaceful feel.

Lighting is everything

Nothing does a better job at accenting the furniture you have like the lighting of a room. By adding texture, warmth, and further developing the character of a room, the placement of candles, a table lamp, or sconce is the perfect way to bring a room together and to suffuse the area with comfort. The interplay between artificial lighting and natural lighting is also key when it comes to taking full advantage of a room’s potential. The options are endless. Just keep in mind: cool lighting and heavy illumination are great for a work environment, but not for every room of the house!

New season, new decor

There’s no better way to live in comfort than bringing the seasons indoors. Just as seasonal changes allow us to see the world in a different light, so too does redecorating a room. Just imagine the atmosphere in your home when filled with festive decor and furnished with a new loveseat or table! Accent textiles or rugs are a great choice when revamping a space because of their versatility, aesthetic, and ease of replacement. Again, if you want to cool things down visually, go for the greens, blues, and monochromatic hues. Pastels, of any color, will also create a cool ambiance to your living spaces.

To the Max!

maximalism designed living room space

To the Max!

In the process of enduring lockdowns with sanity intact, we have rediscovered the inherent value of having a space that one can distinctly call their own. The world has changed, you along with it, and now that you are perceiving your home under this fresh, new light, you are probably thinking that it could do with some updating, too. Perhaps some inventive choices that will keep your personal flair but will also push your look into new dimensions.

Adopting a new design can be quite the undertaking, but fear not: the latest approach tends not to focus on what we want to rid ourselves of and replace with, but rely more on what we already have (and lots of it!) and how it relates to our personal history. But how can it be said that trends are wanting a new, fresh look when the idea is based largely on a connection to the past? Most likely this is due to our collective time spent indoors over the last 12-plus months, perusing all of our memorabilia of times well-lived. Thanks to this, the things that have given us definition to our memories are now being displayed and celebrated not only for nostalgia’s sake, but for gratitude’s as well.

This emphasis on personality and character has bucked the Marie Kondo ideology of the last few years and has instead resurfaced an older, historic school of art thought known as “Maximalism”. Essentially, maximalism is the opposite of minimalism: instead of “less is more,” “more is more!” Now that may sound obvious, but maximalism has only recently bled from other realms of art into interior design; while the priority may appear to be just on “more stuff,” the true aesthetic hinges instead on placement and complexity. Vibrancy of appearance and shape, pattern repetition and variety have their roles to play as well, not to mention an item’s story; how it relates to you or how you acquired it.

Bar none, a maximalist room should be visually arresting when it is entered; the space needs to be layered thickly with pieces that feature intricate patterns, designs, textures and bold hues woven into an idiosyncratic visual theme reflecting your personality. Items should be of varying material, but preferably hearty, well-made objects and ornate, handmade, eclectic ones. While abundance is key, try to keep from too many adornments as the format has a reputation for being cluttered or “busy.”

We suggest a small area or room to start. Proceed by layering color, then patterns and then work outwardly with larger items. To help you manage the style, or contain it to a single location, a Tradewinds Bookcase or Stickley Book Rack would make a great base for a maximalist collage, or as an addition to one already in-progress. Throw cushions, plants and books are easy to accessorize and provide a great place to begin. Not sure where to go from here? Stop in to one of our Ennis Fine Furniture showrooms and our staff of professional designers can consult you on maximalism, or any design you wish to pursue!

Back to The Future With Mid-Century Modern

mid-century modern living room design

Summer months are just around the corner.  This is the time of year when people often begin to think of moving, upgrading, or reimagining their current homes.  If you are thinking of moving into a new home in the upcoming months, or simply wanting to switch up your interior design, exploring Mid-Century Modern styles and motifs is a sure way to brighten up the home.

Mid-Century Modern: The Basics

Although what defines a Mid-Century Modern (Mid-mod) home is somewhat ambiguous, there are some definite characteristics that experts have agreed upon where architecture is concerned. An abundance of natural light, open floor plans carved out through the amplified presence of windows, and generous ceiling spaces.Additionally, floor plans and design features that merge the outdoors with the interior are common elements seen across these mid-20th century homes. The hey-day of the Mid-mod period was from the 1940’s through the 1960s.

In furniture, Mid-mod design aesthetic is often characterized by a “back to the future” look. Sweeping yet narrow designs in metals, woods, and even plastics that meet with leather and fabrics to create a “Jetsons” sense of appeal. It was during the Mid-mod period that designers also played with colors by introducing colors to the American home that previously had not been seen. Colors like orange cream sickle, bright lemon, and yes, avocado green.

Theme Revitalization — Form & Function

First gaining popularity with the public in post-war America, Mid-Century Modern homes have had a resurgence of popularity over the past decade. This is in large part due to their refreshing, natural atmosphere, and practical designs, which persist throughout the home. Particularly, this design has had success with millennials as they become homeowners and seek living spaces similar to perhaps saw in popular media and retro TV shows. Buyers “of a certain older demographic” are also seeking out a Mid-mod look that harkens back to their youth. This design style also lends itself very well to those that are wishing to simplify and declutter.

Your Furniture, Your Selection

Now that you’ve learned more about this style, you are probably wondering what kind of furniture pieces to add to your own home that will help to create a vibrant feeling harkening back to America’s so-called “golden age”. Trimmed wooden tables and chairs are one way to add a mod-feel to either a living room or dining room, and coupled with some contemporary artwork, family and friends alike are sure to be dazzled by your métier in decorative style. Touching up any room with a modern chest or dresser, or the c placement of a fern or succulent in any space is also a surefire way to add that Mid-Century Modern touch.

No matter your age group or your style ethic. This is the season to shine and create your ideal home. Want more information on mid-century modern or other design inspirations? Let There Be Light!

kitchen lighting at Ennis Fine Furniture

Your home is a refuge from a world full of deadlines, due dates, and sensory overload; a haven from the harsh sounds and lights which can overwhelm. Whether you want more drama, more tranquility (or just more light!) in your home, we recommend you rethink lighting’s ability to add to the quality of your life and your home’s comfort and character. In other words, make you home refuge even more functional, comfortable and personalized.

Central Lighting: The Center of Discussion

One of the easiest and most economical ways to elevate your home’s interior lighting is through the addition of a central light fixture to a room. For a more elegant and refined style, try one of our chandeliers, with a myriad of modern and traditional styles available for your choosing, you are sure to find on that fits your tastes and requirements. If a more rustic or industrial look is what you are looking for, you should consider a lighting fixture, such as the Pinecroft Wall Sconce, by Uttermost that lends itself to a more casual feel. You see, formal to casual- lighting sets the tone and the mood.

Brightness: Putting Together the Room

Not only can lighting change things up in your home but varying the intensity of the brightness across rooms and spaces can also greatly enhance and or change the feel to any area. The gentle glow that one might want while reading by lamp light on the sofa contrasts greatly from the bright, well-illuminated feel of a light designed to brighten a kitchen island. In order to differentiate your spaces, mix and match lamp shades and even consider sconces hung at intervals or light dimmers to add drama and character across your living space. Once you see what lighting can do from both a functional and fashion perspective, we know your imagination will be ignited.

Layering Lights & Colors: The Final Touch

To add further character and complexity to your home lighting, consider layering lights and colors. While some rooms have a focal point for which the necessity of light decreases outwardly, many rooms have several areas of varying utility. For example: the space at an entryway can be made stylistically different from that of a staircase through coordination of different lighting styles and lighting intensities. It is important to note that layering of lights does not have to be functional; it can be for aesthetic presentation alone (which is often the most enjoyable!) Get creative—after all this is your home and even the lighting should have your unique sense of style.

There are so many unique and undiscovered aesthetics that can be achieved with lighting that we understand that it can seem a daunting task. It is not at all because we are here to help!
