Make Way For The Holidays!
Make Way For The Holidays!
The Holidays are upon us! Are you planning on having guests over to help celebrate the Season but believe your house may be a bit cluttered? Here are some helpful tips that may assist you in clearing up some space for the entertaining you want to do this season. And, at the same time, make your home-space more peaceful and uncluttered.
Donate!
A great way to clear additional room in your home for the Holidays is by donating the décor, furniture, and cluttering items to your favorite charity! Items that you may look at first are, of course, items that have no sentimental value to you. Décor can bring visual and physical bulk and clutter to your living space. You may look around your room and see a dried flower arrangement on a table, desk, or mounted on the wall and suddenly realize you placed it there in 1994. This may be a good time to donate it. Bulky furniture items that tend to trespass into throughways and pathways are perfect candidates for removing to gain space. Think of that old end-table that you have banged your foot on multiple times over the years. Donating it will not only clear more space in your home, but it may also just feel quite satisfying! Tip: if an item truly brings you joy, regardless of how “cluttering” it may be, hang on to it. Your joy is enough reason to have it in your life. For those items you do decide to donate, we can assume they will bring joy to someone else! Afterall, Joy is what the Holiday Season is all about!
Rearrange Your Living Space!
It is amazing how just a little time experimenting with how your furniture and décor are laid out can make a big difference in the usable space of a room. We recommend roughly sketching (or beautifully sketching if you are capable!) your living space out on a notepad with your furniture and décor. Experiment by drawing your furniture and décor items in different locations of the room. Use as many pages as necessary and experiment with different layouts! You will want to pay special attention to walkways, opens areas, and light because your goal is to create more space and less clutter. Once you believe you have the new layout right, it is time to bring in “the troops” to help move your furniture!
Tidy Up!
Look around your living space with a critical eye as this may lead to revelations for making way for the Holidays. Do you have 1, 2, or 3+ too many decorative pillows and or throw blankets taking up space on the sofa and chairs in your home? Removing those items to a linen closet or storage trunk will provide additional seating space and create a cleaner presentation for both you and your guests. Another area of the home that may need attention during the Holidays is your entryway. Shoes, sweaters, & coats that normally reside in these areas can provide clutter and should be organized in appropriate storage areas and closets while you are entertaining. Speaking of the entryway closet- you will want to make sure there is room for your guests’ winter coats when they come to call!
Add Something New!
Nothing can revitalize a room like a new piece of furniture. You may want to “go big” with a completely new take on the room with the new furniture and décor to match, or you may decide just one anchor piece, like a buffet table, is enough. We recommend that you choose an item that gives you joy and will be around for many more holiday seasons to come.
